A Legacy of Service, Dedication and Leadership
Mr. Donald Harris’s journey of service began early when he was drafted into the United States Army during his senior year of high school. Unable to attend his graduation, he served his country for two years in the Vietnam War. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal for his bravery and dedication as an infantry soldier. His mother accepted his high school diploma on his behalf, where he was recognized as Valedictorian of his class.
After completing his military service, Mr. Harris enrolled at Fort Valley State College in 1971 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in 1975. He continued his education at Georgia College, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Physical Education in 1977, and later returned to obtain a Master of Science in Biology in 1987.
Mr. Donald Harris is a devoted man of God, chairing the Deacon Ministry of Plainview Baptist Church for 37 years. He is a strong role model in the community. Mr. Harris dedicated 30 years to educating the youth of Morgan County, beginning his career at Morgan County Middle School in 1976 and later moving to Morgan County High School in 1981. He remained at the high school until his retirement in 2005, though he continued to work part-time until 2010. Throughout his tenure, he inspired countless students as a science teacher and as a “beloved” coach.
For 25 years, Mr. Harris served as the head coach for the Boys Basketball team, achieving an impressive record of 380 wins. Under his leadership, the team experienced 19 winning seasons and became state runner-up in both 1986 and 1990. Additionally, he contributed to the football program as an Assistant Coach for 15 years.
In 2008, Mr. Harris was elected to the Morgan County Board of Commissioners in a special election. He served his community with distinction, holding roles as both Chairman and Vice Chairman.
Mr. Harris is married to Mrs. Geraldine Gordon Harris, a fellow educator, and they have one son, Donald Dermid Harris, who followed in their footsteps as an educator.
Mr. Donald Harris’s legacy as an educator, veteran, coach, deacon, and County Commissioner is marked by his unwavering commitment to service, leadership, and community impact. For over three decades, he shaped the minds and lives of many students, both in the classroom and on the basketball court, leaving an indelible mark on Morgan County. Today, you can still find Coach Harris volunteering his time at the church, the local food pantry, and supporting high school athletics—a testament to his lifelong dedication to his community.
